Keeping your cloud data secure

Cloud storage has taken the world by storm for its ability to offer digital storage without taking up any space on your hard drive. We’ve spoken before about the benefits of cloud storage, but you might also have to do some upkeep to ensure your data is safe. If nothing else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

1. Two-factor authentication

Most cloud services support two-factor authentication, meaning your password is not enough to access your storage. An additional code sent to your phone will also be required to access it, so you do not have to rely on your (potentially crackable) password alone.

2. Enable account recovery

On a similar note, getting into your own account might be difficult if you forget your password, which might be more likely to happen if you have a strong, hard-to-guess one. Account recovery options use backup accounts, such as phone or email, to help you reset your password, so make sure that you keep these options up to date.

3. Delete sensitive data

Cloud services usually have recycle bins like desktop computers, which can help combat accidental deletions. However, if your data is particularly sensitive, you will want to make sure it is gone. These recycle bins are usually emptied after a certain number of days, but it might be best to permanently delete the files directly.

4. Archive important data

On the other hand, being thorough with deletion can be a double-edged sword, especially when data loss is a big issue mainly down to human error. Depending on what you use cloud storage for and how important your data is, an accidental loss could be devastating for you or your company.

5. Check your connections

Remove any devices from your cloud storage if you no longer use or have access to them. You should also limit the number of third-party applications which are connected to your storage – a committed hacker could use them to gain access.
