What do I need to look for when buying a new computer?

Looking to buy a new computer? Here at Computerman IT, we understand that this process can be very confusing. Which model should you pick? Which features should be prioritised? It’s important to consider your individual computer-related needs, ensuring you will make the optimum choice. Our experts aim to make purchasing a new computer an easier, more streamlined process. As a starting point, we’ve created this guide detailing the things you need to look out for when buying a new computer:

Processor

It is worth thinking about how much power you will need from your processor, as this will inevitably vary across computers. If you need a computer to be able to perform general daily tasks – such as online shopping – we recommend choosing one with a cheaper and less powerful processor, such as the Intel Core i3 chip. For professionals who have no time to waste on loading screen time, we would suggest investing in a more powerful processor such as the Intel Core i5 chip.

RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This is the place where the data from your running applications is stored, not to be confused with general computer storage. It is important, therefore, to consider the RAM size of your potential purchase. Think about how many applications you will need to operate, both in general and at the same time. This can be a tricky thing to navigate, so it may be worth requesting some expert advice if you are unsure.

Storage

There are two different types of storage within a computer: HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and SSD (Solid State Drive). The key difference is that a HDD uses an older method of storage, which is a small disk spinning around constantly and at speed. Alternatively, an SSD uses more up to date technology, similar to what is used by smartphones and tablets. This involves flash memory and allows you to store more than HDDs. You should note that while the technology may be more expensive, it does provide the most benefits.
